What Is a Bumiputera Lot?
Bumiputera Lot (or "Bumi Lot") is property that can only be purchased and owned by Bumiputera — a category encompassing Malays, natives of Sabah and Sarawak, Orang Asli, and under certain state definitions also non-Malay Muslims. The Bumiputera Lot quota is set by each state during development approval (typically 30%-50% of units in a project), and varies by state and development type.
Can Bumiputera Lots Be Sold to Non-Bumiputera?
Yes — but it requires State Authority approval first, and is not an automatic process. In general: the owner must market the unit to Bumiputera buyers first for a period usually 6 months to 1 year; if no Bumi buyer is found, an application to "release" the status can be submitted to the state government. This approval is discretionary, may take months to years, is not guaranteed, and if approved the owner typically must pay back the Bumi price discount received from the developer at the original purchase.
A property that has ALREADY obtained this approval is called a Released Bumi Lot — can be purchased by anyone without needing to wait for additional approval process. Use the "Land Status" filter on the side to view the list of released lots separately from ordinary Bumiputera Lots.
